Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse

Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse is a non-profit organization located in Philadelphia’s East Fairmount Park.  Founded in 1899, Smith welcomes over 215,000 visits annually from more than 500 zip code areas.  Smith’s mission is to be Philadelphia’s foremost resource for play by providing opportunities for unstructured creative play for children 10 and younger. Smith contributes to the development of healthy children, strong families, and safe communities by: 1) maintaining a proud tradition of free family admission; 2) partnering with community-based organizations to reach a diverse audience; and 3) advocating for the importance of play.

Smith has been a beloved treasure for over 100 years, serving as a family resource for multiple generations.

Smith welcomes a culturally, racially, and economically diverse audience from across the city, the region, and the world. Free admission eliminates barriers to access.

Community-based programming helps Smith reach families most in need, providing on-the-spot play opportunities for children and education and advocacy lessons for adults.

Family events, partnership programs with organizations like the Franklin Institute, the Free Library, and Enchantment Theatre, bring enriching experiences straight to families.

A new Nature Explore space provides opportunities for nature play and learning and is paving the way for a planned Urban Nature Preschool at Smith.
